SHORELINE - Each year, the Campus Ambassador Program organizes SCC's Student Club Leadership Awards to recognize and celebrate achievements of outstanding student clubs, officers, and advisors.

On May 23, 2008 the following 14 awards were presented to:

Jessica Puckett for Student Leader of the Year Glen Harris (Archery Club) & Lynette Peters (FMLA) for Club Advisor of the Year (tied) Archery Club for Community Service Award Vietnamese Club for Cultural Heritage Award Environmental Club & Pre-Med Sciences Club for Club of the Year (tied) Indian Student Society, Aiki Bujutsu, Fencing Club, & Jazz Improvisation Club for Club Expo 2008 Audience Award Junichi Takada, Mia Dang, & Adam Rost for Ambassador Award.

Three new hires in three administrative positions will help move Shoreline Community College forward.  “I’m very excited that these three individuals are bringing their talents and experience to benefit the students at Shoreline Community College,” President Lee Lambert said today.

Tonya M. Drake, Ph.D. – Vice President for Student Success

Dr. Drake is presently District Director, Student Affairs for the Maricopa County Community College District, in Phoenix, Ariz., serving in that position since 2003.

“I am excited to join the dynamic and engaging team at Shoreline Community College,” Drake said. “While I have enjoyed my experiences in Arizona, I am very excited to return to the Northwest. I believe that student learning and student success can be achieved both inside and outside the classroom through collaboration, intentional actions, and by focusing on things that 'matter.' 

“Shoreline Community College is a vibrant campus that continuously strives for excellence.  I look forward to contributing to that excellence in my work with staff, faculty, fellow administrators, and most importantly, students.”

From 2000-03, Drake was Assistant Executive Director, Academic and Student Affairs for the Arizona Board of Regents. Drake spent a year as the Director of the Upward Bound (a federal Trio program) at Gateway Community College, in Phoenix. At Arizona State University, from 1997-99, Drake served as Program Coordinator, Scholar Recruitment. And, from 1994-97, Drake was Counselor Coordinator, Educational Talent Search at the University of Washington.

Drake is a product of the Washington community college system with an AA from Lower Columbia College, in Longview. She received a BA in Business Administration from the University of Washington, an M.Ed from Arizona State University. Drake’s doctorate in Education Leadership and Policy Studies is also from ASU.

Drake will start July 1 at SCC.

Bill Sperling – Director of ABE/ESL/GED

Sperling is presently Workforce Education Manager at Cascadia Community College, in Bothell, where he oversees the school’s Worker Retraining and WorkFirst programs. At Shoreline Community College, Sperling will be in charge of the Adult Basic Education, English as a Second Language classes and the General Education Development program.

 “Bill brings a tremendous amount of experience and knowledge of the local challenges facing students in these important programs,” SCC President Lee Lambert said. “The students are fortunate to have Bill coming to SCC.”

Before going to Cascadia in 2006, Sperling spent eight years at Everett Community College as Dean for Learning Services where he supervised that school’s ABE, ESL and high-school completion programs. Sperling also served at Seattle Central Community College from 1994-98 as Associate Dean, Basic Studies Division. Sperling has experience at the state level, serving one year as Interim Director of Adult Education for the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction, and nine years with the State Board for Community and Technical Colleges as Director, ABLE Network/Northwest Literacy Resource Center. Sperling began his career in 1976 at Grays Harbor College as Coordinator of the Basic Education Program.

“Much of my experience has been serving the more under-prepared population and increasing access,” Sperling said. “Just providing basic skills is not enough unless those skills can be used as a springboard for transfer or job programs or whatever path they choose.”

Sperling holds a Master’s in Higher Education from the University of Washington, where he also earned a BA in English. He has done work toward a doctorate at Seattle University and attended Harvard University.

Ritva Manchester – Director of Annual Giving, Community and Alumni Relations

Although the title is new, Manchester doesn’t have far to move, currently holding the title of Interim Director of the Shoreline Community College Foundation. The direct appointment by SCC President Lee Lambert is part of an organizational restructuring puts the Foundation and the Public Information Office into the newly formed Office of College Advancement.

“The restructuring and filling of this position puts us in position to have a close working relationship between the Foundation and the Public Information Office,” Lambert said. “This is the model many institutions use to great success. Ritva has shown her skills and commitment in the interim foundation position and I’m confident Ritva is the right person for this new role.”

Manchester is a Shoreline resident, an SCC alumnus and graduated from Western Washington University. She is a longtime community and schools activist, serving as chief of staff for a former King County Council member and is a three-time Golden Acorn Award recipient from the Shoreline School District.

“I’m excited to help bring the needed resources to the Foundation and Shoreline Community College to support the scholarships and many wonderful programs that serve students,” Manchester said.

Manchester will continue to serve as Interim Foundation Director until leadership for the Office of College Advancement is finalized.

If you ask anyone at Shoreline Community College if they know Jane Winslow, they would most likely say that they do and that she is a fantastic instructor.  Not only does she know her stuff, and love it, she knows how to relate to her students.  Winslow does this so well that many of them keep coming back to work on projects with Winslow after they graduate. 

Winslow’s popularity goes far beyond the campus, however, and she is currently sharing her “stuff” at a workshop at the 10th Annual Hazel Wolf Environmental Film Festival, May 1-4 at Johnson Hall at the University of Washington.  She will share her filmmaking knowledge and expertise at “The Art of the Interview for Documentary Films,” Saturday, May 3, from 2 to 5 p.m.

The workshop will explore how to ask the tough questions, how to make people comfortable, preliminary interviews, what to do with "problem" interviews, issues of ethics, manipulation, deception and more.

Humanities Dean Norma Goldstein cannot say enough positive remarks about Winslow, both her teaching ability and her character.  “As a well-known professional film/video documentary specialist, Jane Winslow has both inspired and mentored Shoreline's film students to become involved with their communities. She has been instrumental in providing students with the skills they need to develop their filmmaking careers.  Her students have repeatedly been courted by public agencies to film and produce film projects such as Seattle's Folk Life Festival and other major community events.  She's a dynamo in the classroom, and her students appreciate the skills, knowledge and experience she brings to their learning.”

Winslow is an independent producer, director, editor, DP, scriptwriter, production consultant and still photographer.  Her video production company, FireDancer Productions, specializes in documentaries, promo/training and arts programs. She has worked as a segment director and DP for Hallmark Channel, was  principle photographer and editor for a Pilgrimage for Peace involving Tibetan refugees and co-producer/editor on BeComing: Women’s Circles, Women’s Lives.  Winslow has won numerous awards for her video programs.

In addition to teaching filmmaking full-time at the college, Winslow teaches workshops for 911 Media Arts.  She has worked as a trainer/product specialist for Snell & Wilcox’s HD and SD Switcher/Digital Effects (DVE) equipment at NAB, IBC Amsterdam, NBC Network News Burbank, the BBC and Entertainment Tonight/Paramount Studio to name a few.

She also shows her photography and video installations in galleries and has been published in various publications such as Mandala Magazine and PATH Annual Report 2001.  She  has photographed extensively throughout Southeast Asia, Nepal, Europe, Greece, Turkey, Central and South America as well as the United States.
