Gidget Terpstra was appointed to the Board of Trustees at Shoreline Community College in July, 2004. Terpstra is currently the Readiness to Learn Family (RTL) Advocate for Parkwood Elementary School and the District Homeless Education Liaison for the Shoreline Public School District. In both positions, she ensures that the non-academic needs of students and families are met. She received the Washington Award for Excellence in Education in 1999, awarded by the Washington State Governor and the State Superintendent of Public Instruction for her RTL work with Kellogg Middle School and Shorecrest High School. Terpstra served as a trustee on the Shoreline Public Schools Foundation from 1994 until 2003, two years of which she was secretary. She has also been active in community organizations such as local PTAs and the district council PTA, Camp Fire Girls, North Urban Human Services Alliance, Northshore/Shoreline Community Health & Safety Network, and Shoreline Youth Summits. Terpstra and her husband, Dennis have lived in Shoreline for over 30 years and have two children. She recently served on the Advisory Board to the SCC FACES Project, a federally-funded research project to examine the means by which colleges provide training to new immigrant communities and incorporate diversity issues into their curricula.
