The two are best known for Manifesta: Young Women, Feminism, and
the Future, a book they co-authored about the state of the women's movement. The
book, which garnered national acclaim, has served as the platform for a national
speaking tour since 2000 and brought praise from the likes of other activists
including Gloria Steinem, Eve Ensler and Naomi Wolf.
The speaking tour and other experiences prompted the two to
found Soapbox Inc. Speakers Who Speak Out. In 2005, they released a new book
about everyday activism called Grassroots: A Field Guide for Feminist Activism.
Joint writings by Amy Richards and Jennifer Baumgardner can be
found in The Nation and several anthologies, including the new book about
everyday activism called Grassroots: A Field Guide for Feminist Activism.
Richards and Baumgardner have worked together on various projects since they met
at Ms. Magazine.
They moderated several panels at the 2000 Rockrgrl Conference in
Seattle, gave a keynote address in the 2001 D.C. Visions in Feminism Conference,
presented at the Unitarian Universalist Annual Conference, and delivered a
number of speeches on the future of pro-choice advocacy for Planned Parenthood's
regional and national meetings. Baumgardner and Richards also presented at the
2001 Women's Studies Conference, a rarity for non-academics, discussing how to
connect women's studies to young feminist activism.
