SCC partners with Swedish Medical Center and
Service Employees International Union 1199NW
to train Registered Nurses
In 2003, the long-standing national shortage of
registered nurses spurred Swedish Medical Center to partner with Shoreline
Community College (SCC) and Service Employees International Union (SEIU) 1199NW
to develop and provide a new innovative program to train people already working
in health care to become RNs. The Healthcare Career Advance Program (H-CAP) was
launched at SCC as a pilot project to train nurses using a combination of online
learning and a traditional clinical practicum.
The first graduates of the program were honored at a graduation
ceremony at Swedish Medical Center on December 13th. Congratulations
to graduates Rose Huggett of Shoreline; Gabriella Mihaly of Arlington; Sasha
Ness of Mountlake Terrace; Lastena Orallo and Lolita Santos of Kent; and Elvira
Velasquez of Federal Way, who range in age from mid-20s to mid-40s. They
received their associate degree in nursing at completion of the program and will
take their state registered nurse licensing exams in February 2006.
Swedish President and CEO Richard Peterson, Swedish
Chief Nursing Officer Cathy Whitaker and other Swedish and SEIU 1199 NW
officials honored the students at the graduation celebration. SCC Director of
Nursing Bette Perman and Professor Emeritus Janice Ellis (who was instrumental
in the partnership) also attended to represent the community college’s nursing
program.
